WRR Classical 101.1 FM absolutely one of my favorites!
The City of Dallas-owned radio station not only pioneered the local airwaves; WRR was the first licensed broadcast station in Texas and one of the nation’s five inaugural stations.
Operated by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, WRR is an integral component of the City of Dallas’ commitment to providing access to arts opportunities to all its citizens.
City-owned radio stations may not be the norm in most broadcast markets, but WRR is not an average radio station. Licensed August 5, 1921, the station was originally housed in the Dallas Fire Department and touted as the latest in firefighter communications. When firemen had no blazing fires to battle, however, they blazed the broadcast trail by playing music or telling jokes.
WRR was the brainchild of inventor Henry Garrett, a Police and Fire Signal Superintendent for the City of Dallas who began tinkering with radio in his off-duty hours. Garrett envisioned radio as the modern way for firefighters in the field to communicate. And he sold city officials on the efficiency and safety value his concept could offer.

…To Uncle Vernon who was there for me when my own Dad was not. He taught me all the stuff guys need to know and took me on all kinds of vacation and hunting trips that I probably would have never had the opportunity to go on. Everytime I hear the chorus of the Brad Paisley song “He didn’t have to be” I think of Uncle Vernon. Thank you Sir and happy Dad’s day.
Lookin’ back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I’m at least half the dad
That he didn’t have to be

…but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. —Winston Churchill
Toward the end of World War II, the people of Warsaw, Poland were picking through the rubble of their city. Bombs and shells had leveled virtually every building, until only a few chimneys remained standing; grotesque and useless obelisks against the iron-gray sky.
But the Poles looked up in wonder at one wall of a building that was still standing. It was the only remaining wall of the British and Foreign Bible Society. The wall bore a sign with letters that were still clearly legible even after the many bombardments: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Matthew 24:26-35
